What Should You Know About Toothpaste?

Posted on 3/10/2015 by Truman Nielsen
What should you know about toothpaste? Few products are as enduring and celebrated as toothpaste, nor as polarizing. Individuals not only tend to have their favorite brand of toothpaste, but they also typically feel very strongly about their choice. When pressed on the issue, individuals might very well name the consistency, taste, and perceived effectiveness as their main reasons for choosing one brand over the other, however as a rule, general recipe toothpaste varies very little from brand to brand.

Similar Active Ingredients and Main Components

Most brands of toothpaste are formulated very similarly, and contain three main categories of active ingredients: detergents, abrasives, and fluoride compounds. Detergents are used primarily to loosen stains covering your teeth in order to more easily remove them and keep your teeth clean. The most common detergent found in toothpaste is called sodium lauryl sulfate, and can be extracted from substances such as palm kernel or coconut oil. Abrasives, which might sound rather worrisome at first, are very mild substances that are used to clean your teeth of stains and surface deposits. The third component, fluoride compounds, have been consistently shown to prevent tooth decay for more than 100 years since its first inclusion in toothpaste in 1914. It also aids in strengthening tooth enamel and helps make it more resistant to the effects of acids, and is generally considered the most important ingredient.

American Dental Association's (ADA) Seal of Approval

To be certain your favorite toothpaste contains all of the ingredients necessary to ensure proper oral health and maintenance, check for the ADA's seal of approval. The seal is the only way to accurately and conclusively determine that the toothpaste in question has been proven by independent research to serve as an effective cleaning agent and help prevent tooth decay.
